How to Choose a 4K Display for Work and Entertainment

Resolution, panel type, size, and connectivity — what to look for when buying a 4K TV or monitor.

Choosing a 4K display can feel overwhelming with so many options. Here’s what actually matters.

Resolution and pixel density

4K (3840×2160) is the standard for most new displays. For screens under 32 inches, 4K gives you sharp text and detail; for larger TVs and monitors, it’s expected. Consider 5K or higher only if you do heavy design or video work and need the extra space.

Panel type

IPS — Best color accuracy and viewing angles, ideal for design and multi-monitor setups. VA — Deeper blacks and good contrast, great for movies and gaming. OLED — Best contrast and per-pixel control; premium price and possible burn-in with static content.

Size and viewing distance

For desks, 27–32" is common for a single monitor; 24–27" if you use two or three. For TVs, a simple rule: sit about 1.2–1.5× the screen height away for 4K so you can see the detail.

Connectivity

Look for HDMI 2.1 if you game or use high-refresh 4K; DisplayPort for PCs. USB-C with DisplayPort Alt Mode is handy for laptops. Check how many inputs you need for consoles, PC, and streaming devices.

Once you’ve narrowed by size and panel type, compare warranty, calibration options, and our current video and display selection to find the right model.
