Best Projectors for Home Theater: What to Look For

Lumens, throw distance, and room setup — a short guide to choosing a home theater projector.

A good projector can turn a room into a cinema. These are the main things to consider.

Brightness (lumens)

For a dedicated dark room, 1,500–2,500 lumens is often enough. For a room with some ambient light or a large image, aim for 2,500–3,500+ lumens. “ANSI lumens” is the spec to compare; marketing “lumens” can be inflated.

Throw distance and zoom

Measure from the lens to the screen. Use the manufacturer’s throw calculator to see if a model fits your room. Short-throw projectors sit close to the wall; long-throw need more distance. Optical zoom gives flexibility without moving the projector.

Resolution and HDR

1080p is still fine for many; 4K is the upgrade path. HDR support improves contrast and color on compatible content — check that the projector actually accepts and maps HDR, not just 4K.

Room setup

Ceiling mount is common; ensure the unit has lens shift or keystone so you can align the image without tilting. Consider ambient light and wall color; a proper screen will improve contrast and color.
